Benjamin Mckenzie nasce il 12 Settembre del 1978 in Texas. Ha due fratelli entrambi più giovani di lui. Sua madre, Frances, è una scrittrice
e una poetessa, mentre suo padre, Pete Schenkkan, lavora come avvocato.
Dopo essersi laureato nel 2001 alla facoltà di Economia
all'Università della Virginia, già frequentata da suo padre
e suo nonno prima di lui, Ben lascia la Grande Mela per
inseguire il sogno di diventare un attore.
E' apparso in uno show a Broadway intitolato "Life is a Dream"
e a numerose produzioni al Williamstown Theatre Festival tra
cui "Street Scene" e "The Blue Bird". Quando ancora
frequentava l'Università, ha partecipato a due rappresentazioni teatrali quali "Measure for Measure" e "Zoo Story".
A Los Angeles, dopo aver ottenuto qualche particina in "
JAG" e in "The District", si è aggiudicato il ruolo del problematico
diciassettenne Ryan Atwood nella serie televisiva "The O.C."
esattamente un anno dopo il suo arrivo nella città californiana.
